In July 2018, Smile Brands announced a partnership with P3 Dental Group. As part of the partnership, P3 Dental Group added its fifth general office and is expected to expand in periodontics and oral surgery access across all locations in the future.

In September 2017, an engineer-led team from the University of California, San Diego announced development of a new dental imaging method to examine the health of patients’ gingivae. This new method of checking for any signs of periodontal disease involves applying a mixture of squid ink, water and cornstarch to the gingivae and then examining using light and ultrasound. This method is expected to be less invasive, more comprehensive and more accurate than existing methods.
